Verizon Wireless Phones
Verizon
Wireless Phones is the No. 1 U.S. wireless service provider, as on
Jan 28 2004, and its customer base grew by about 4
percent in the fourth quarter, beating some Wall Street estimates
and dwarfing the growth rate of its nearest rivals. Moreover, the
venture of Verizon Communications and
Britain's Vodafone Group Plc added roughly 1.5
million customers, bringing its total to about 37.5 million. It
added more than 10 times as many subscribers as AT&T Wireless
and more than twice as many as Cingular Wireless in the
quarter.
In contrast,
industry No. 3 AT&T Wireless Services Inc, which put itself up
for sale last week of Jan 2004, added 128,000 subscribers in the
fourth quarter and posted an unexpected loss as customers left due
to the new rule and it had severe technical
problems.
Cingular
Wireless, the No. 2 U.S. provider, added 642,000 new customers in
the quarter but posted a shrinking profit. Like most of its rivals,
Cingular's costs rose as it offered better deals to keep existing
customers and lure some away from competitors.
